AI and The things that come with it: Good and Bad
Everything in the cybersecurity articles out there are all talking about Artificial Intelligence (AI) and how great it is for just about everything, from assisting with coding, writing papers, learning from, and so on. However, what about the bad side of AI? In cybersecurity we need to always look at the actual security side of everything and that even includes AI.
AI is growing stronger daily in use by everyone and all over the world. This also means that hackers are utilizing AI to assist with hacking into different networks and different types of businesses. Which brings me to the most recent article that I read about Google’s Gemini AI that actually threatened a grad student that was using it to do an assignment and asking it questions in regards to that assignment. Gemini was working as it should until suddenly it wasn’t. It went from answering questions regarding aging to telling the grad student to die. This begs the question, did Gemini get hacked or did the AI actually turn to stating this to the student itself?
Did Google even look into why it’s Gemini responded out of the blue to the student in such a horrific way? Is Google even looking into the possibility that it was hacked? If a company is not going to stay on top of their AI, why create? Other than trying to stay in the running against ChatGPT, Apple Intelligence, and many others that are out, however again, why create these AIs if you are not going to stay on top of security? These are the questions we all should be asking and wanting answered. So why isn’t anyone asking these questions? Why has it not even crossed any news outlet, or anyone else out there, that was Gemini hacked or not? This needs to be answered. I know AI is open source, which makes it more vulnerable however, even open source and creating these applications and products we need to have security in mind when doing anything like this.
